Sister Helen Hofmann, a native of Atlantic City and 1963 graduate of Holy Spirit High School, Absecon, celebrated her 50 years as a Sister of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities, on Sept. 13 with her community at the Region House at the Franciscan Village in North Syracuse, N.Y.
She entered the novitiate on Sept. 8, 1963, and professed her final vows on Aug. 15, 1971. From 1989-90, she taught at St. Joseph School in Camden.
From 1965-96, Sister Helen taught in schools in New York, Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and New Jersey.
It was while at Holy Spirit High School, Sister Helen says, when she first felt the calling to become a religious.
“A deep sense of God’s presence in my life, the example of the sisters and my daily interaction with them was a positive influence on my saying ‘yes’ to God’s invitation,” she recalled.
“He kept knocking at my heart. After all these years, I keep saying to myself, ‘With God, all things are possible.’”
Sister Helen has served her community as associate program director since 1996; served as community minister for the CNY region from 2005-12; and, in 2012, was elected as general councilor.
