South Jersey schools win at track & field state tourney

John Flammer, Jonathan Forrest and Shawn Brady are state champions.

Flammer, a senior at Holy Spirit High School; Forrest, a senior at Bishop Eustace Preparatory School, and Brady, a Bishop Eustace junior, won their respective events at the Non-Public B track and field state championships at Delsea High School on June 10.

Flammer won the boys 800 meter run in 1:59.83, while Forrest took gold in the 110 meter high hurdles in a time of 16.32 and also took second in the 200 meter dash in 23.17. Brady won the discus with a throw of 163-4 and finished second in the shot put with a throw of 50-2. Eustace’s 4×800 relay team also won a state championship in a three-team field, helping the Crusaders finish second place overall in team scoring.

Top-six finishers in each event earned points for their teams, which included a pair of third-place finishes by Holy Spirit’s Jason Lewis in the discus and shot put. Holy Spirit’s Luc Louis took sixth in the disc, while Wildwood Catholic Academy’s Jimmy Kane ended up third in the javelin. 

Noah Glenn of Bishop Eustace took third in the high jump and fourth in the high hurdles, while teammate Ryan Gaulrapp was a bronze medalist in the 800 behind Flammer. The Crusaders also took sixth in the 4×100 relay. 

On the girls’ side, Holy Spirit’s Cece Bell finished second in the discus and third in the shot put. Angelina Richards of Wildwood Catholic placed fourth in the 400 intermediate hurdles, and Bishop Eustace’s Elena Cicchini took fourth in the 3,200 meter run.

In the Non-Public A state championships at Franklin High School, Shaelan McNally of Paul VI High School was a silver medalist in the 3,200. The Eagles had a pair of finalists in the 400 as Claire Magee finished third and Anna Marie Brown took sixth. Teammate Kamryn Cieslik took third in the high jump while Paul VI’s relay teams took fourth in the 4×800 and sixth in the 4×100. Camden Catholic High School’s Leah Clear was fifth in the 800 and sixth in the 1,600.

In boys’ action, the Irish received a fourth-place finish from Patrick McInerney in the 1,600, while Paul VI was represented by a sixth-place finish from Savien Higgs in the discus. The Eagles ended up fourth in the 4×800 relay.
