During the month of November, Catholics worldwide are called to remember and pray for the deceased. This tradition, rooted in both Scripture and Church teachings, invites the faithful to honor those who have gone before us.
The Bible encourages such remembrance, especially in the Old Testament, where prayers for the dead are mentioned in 2 Maccabees 12:46, “It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.”
The “Catechism of the Catholic Church” echoes this, explaining that prayer for the dead is an act of mercy and solidarity, rooted in the Church’s belief in the communion of saints. (CCC 1032) Further, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops encourages Catholics to pray for the souls in purgatory, recognizing our shared hope in eternal life through Christ’s Resurrection.
Catholics in South Jersey are encouraged to visit cemeteries to offer prayers for departed loved ones, asking God for their eternal rest.
