Ramona Olivares, one of the leaders for the V Encuentro process at Camden’s Saint Joseph Pro-Cathedral, couldn’t be happier about her experience.

“It has been wonderful,” she states.

Along with the Diocese of Camden’s other parishes, Saint Joseph’s is participating in the V Encuentro, a four-year process of ecclesial reflection and action that calls on Hispanics to missionary activity, consultation, leadership development, and to the identification of best ministerial practices in the spirit of the new evangelization.

In May, each parish will hold their own Encuentro event, before a larger diocesan gathering later this year.

In Deanery 1, where Saint Joseph’s is located, six parishes in Western Camden County are bringing together weekly Christian communities for discernment, prayer, evangelization and catechesis.

Olivares, along with Ysabel Nunez, leads a group of coordinators and facilitators, who in turn direct the parish’s Encuentro gatherings. The 17 small Christian communities that meet weekly at Saint Joseph’s comprise Spanish-speaking and English-speaking faithful, young and old, dedicated to spreading the message of the Gospel.

“One of our English-speaking small communities is a youth group, with teens from 15-19 years old, and another small, bilingual community is made up of altar servers under the age of 14,” Olivares says.

After reflecting on each week’s lesson — be it on how to live the words and actions of Jesus; walking together with him; or being joyful disciples —the church’s 180 participants evangelize throughout Camden, encountering people in their own homes, or in grocery stores, homeless shelters or nursing homes.

“This project has really inspired us, and it’s really doing something for the community,” Olivares knows.

“I see the excitement and happiness of people who want to bring the word of Jesus to others.”

With hopes to have their upcoming parish Encuentro in May, in anticipation of the diocesan Encuentro and, later, the national, Olivares hopes the passion fostered at Saint Joseph’s stays long after the upcoming parish Encuentro, the diocesan one later this year and the national Encuentro in 2018.

“I want this to keep going. My heart has been touched so deeply,” she says.
