We got very confused about what Peter Feuerherd was trying to tell us he sees. (“Simple and direct explanations are usually true,” Nov. 12). If he sees rest stops dedicated to historical figures as somehow tarnished by the truth about their politics then so be it. We hated to use any of the rest stops in New Jersey when they were adorned with pictures of James Florio, Jim McGreevey or even Jon Corsine as New Jersey governors, when these elected officials did some stupid things while in office.
When Feuerherd started his column with, “Does Glenn Beck ever stop at the Woodrow Wilson Rest Stop?” we thought he was going to praise this very Christian educator who constantly asks that his listeners verify the information he is discussing so that they can form their own opinions. Glenn Beck’s commentary on Woodrow Wilson is backed up by historical fact. He does communicate in chalk and blackboard a la Bishop Fulton J. Sheen. He does team with the very Catholic Bill O’Reilly with his No Spin Zone to try and get people out of their arm chairs and into the research necessary to make educated decisions. Neither of them should be described in the same article with MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann, much less considered to be his counterpart.
The framework of Beck and Olbermann and O’Reilly and Woodrow Wilson does not seem to fit the discussion of school and parish closings and consolidations. But I guess that is the way the director of communications for the Diocese of Camden sees it. Maybe he should try to communicate with Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly or at least research what they are saying with regard to history and current events.
