Deacon Francis Crosson of Gloucester City dies

Deacon Francis (Frank) W. Crosson, who spent his years in ministry at his home parish, Saint Mary in Gloucester City, died Dec. 18. He was 81.

Deacon Crosson, known to many as “Butch,” was born in Gloucester City. He attended Gloucester Catholic High School but graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1959.

He entered the U.S. Air Force Reserves, Air Rescue Unit in 1961, and was discharged in 1967.

He was a member of the Gloucester City Police Department and the Washington Township Police Department. He retired as a Sergeant in 1990. Deacon Crosson worked as an Investigator with the State of New Jersey: Department of Criminal Justice and retired in 2014.

A lifelong parishioner of Saint Mary’s, he was ordained in 1997. He was a member of the Gloucester City Knights of Columbus Council 674.

Deacon Crosson was devoted to his family, coaching his daughters in softball and always watching the grandchildren at their sporting events. “He always had a smile on his face. Frank had a big heart and was always willing to help someone in need,” his family said in announcing his death.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in Saint Mary Church on Dec. 21. Cremation private. Inurnment private in New Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Bellmawr.

Deacon Crosson is survived by his wife of 54 years, Maryann Crosson (nee Ott); his daughter Jill (Bruce) Darrow and grandsons Brett, Austin, Angel, Chris and Ron; daughter Janeen (Chris) Coughlin and grandchildren Kylar and Aidan Coughlin; sister Margaret (late Gilbert) Rossiter; sisters-in-law of Annamae Matyasik, Alice (Jim) Mendell and Gerri Johnson; and many nieces and nephews.
