Sister Lissamma Maroor has been elected by her peers as mother general of the Hospitaler Sisters of Mercy.

Sister Lissamma, who has been a member of the Hospitaler Sisters of Mercy for 43 years, was born in India. She becomes the first mother general of Indian descent to assume this role for the international congregation. Previously, she served as vicar for the order from 2014 to 2021.

Sister Lissamma is a familiar face in the Diocese of Camden. For years, she was known as Sister Lucy by senior residents, staff and family members of the Bishop McCarthy Residence, Vineland, where she served as administrator until she left to assume the role of vicar.  She is a graduate of Stockton University, earning a bachelor of science in nursing. She is a licensed registered nurse.

The Hospitaler Sisters of Mercy were founded in 1821 in Rome, with a mission to provide care to the sick. In 2021, the sisters celebrated their 200th anniversary. Today the order has expanded to 14 different countries, where they operate medical and nursing clinics, hospitals, schools and assisted living centers for seniors, and assist in parishes with the homeless, sick and poor communities.

In New Jersey, the sisters operate Villa Raffaella Assisted Living in Pleasantville. Among the other states they serve in is Louisiana, where they provide services to Metanoia Manor, a residential home for child victims of human trafficking. On Feb. 14, the sisters celebrated their 56th anniversary of service in the United States.
