High school golfers took to the course April 29 with a county championship up for grabs at the 26th annual Commissioners Cup.
Played at Valleybrook Country Club in Blackwood, Camden Catholic High School took second place out of 17 boys teams in the competition, finishing just four strokes behind champion Cherry Hill East (334). The foursome of Jack Kelly Lyons (80), Sean McGettigan (84), Chase Haas (86) and Ashton Babnew (88) all finished in the top 10. Kelly Lyons finished in a three-way tie for second place with Matthew Duphorn of Paul VI High School and Jesse Serata of Cherry Hill East. Those three players ended up two strokes back of winner Mac Weldon of Highland, who shot a six-over-par score of 78.
“Our team performed exceptionally well with all four of us performing at a high level,” Kelly Lyons said. “We secured second place overall, which I’m proud to say is a strong achievement. It was a great team effort, and I’m proud of what’s ahead.”

The Irish received some inspiration from their captain, Connor Corbett, who wasn’t able to participate in the tournament.
“He’s like the best captain ever,” Kelly Lyons said. “Even though he couldn’t make it, he was supporting us and boosting our morale in general. He was texting us through the tournament.”
The Paul VI boys team ended up in fourth place with 365 team points as both Michael Diggins and Gabriel Abalos shot a 91. Bishop Eustace finished in 12th place (391) led by a 92 by Jack Brady. Gloucester Catholic’s Mike Joyce carded an 89 to pace the Rams to 13th place (394).
On the girls side, Paul VI won the female team competition for the second straight year with a score of 382 in the five-school competition.
Sophia Greenwood’s 90 was the top score, and her teammates Danni Hennessy (94) and Annalise Capoli (95) also broke 100. Two days later, the Paul VI girls team took third place in the 16-team Carl Arena Tournament, which showcases the best competition in South Jersey. Hennessy’s 86 was the Eagles’ top score and was 11th place overall.
