The Catholic Community of the Holy Spirit has raised more than $15,000 in the wake of the Sept. 1 tornado that damaged the homes of nearly 30 parish families, 11 of which had their homes destroyed.
Through monetary donations and gift cards, the parish has been “so caring and supportive,” said Father Michael Field, pastor of the Mullica Hill parish, who celebrated a Mass of Healing Sept. 14 for those affected by the storm.
The F-3 tornado ripped through Mullica Hill and surrounding areas the evening of Sept. 1, part of the remnants of Hurricane Ida. As the storm moved up the East Coast, it spurred additional tornados and deadly floods across the state, as well as New York and Pennsylvania.
While praising the “generosity and wonderful witness” of his congregation, Father Field admired the attitude of those affected, many of whom looked beyond their own situations, those who “lost not only their homes, but memories” and looked to heal others.
“Not one family said, ‘Why me?’” Father Field said of those he has visited. “They worried about the others; Holy Spirit is an other-centered, exceptional community.”
The parish is continuing to collect gift cards to local restaurants and places as Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart, and Target to help families in need. Those wishing to make a donation can visit the parish office at 17 Earlington Ave., Mullica Hill. For more information, visit holyspiritweb.org.
