Bishop Eustace Preparatory School graduate Zac Gallen returned to his hometown on baseball’s biggest stage Oct. 16 as the Arizona Diamondbacks star pitcher got the Game 1 start in the National League Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
Head baseball coach Sam Tropiano, who coached Gallen at Bishop Eustace, praised Gallen’s “cerebral approach” on the mound, adding that he was “easy to root for.”
Gallen, a Somerdale native and University of North Carolina graduate, had won his first two postseason starts for the Diamondbacks this season before running into the hot-swinging Phillies, who touched up Gallen for three home runs in a 5-3 victory.
This season for Arizona, Gallen won 17 regular season games and posted a 3.21 ERA and 220 strikeouts. He was selected to start the 2023 Major League Baseball All-Star Game for the National League.
Ahead of the NLC matchup, NBC 10 Philadelphia visited with Tropiano and the Gallen Family to talk about the Bishop Eustace alumni’s rise in baseball. They met at the South Jersey Baseball Hall of Fame, at the Cherry Hill campus of Camden County College, the gallery of which features Gallen.
