Camden Catholic High School graduate Kevin McDonnell made history May 5 by becoming the first American in 30 years to win the 43rd annual Broad Street Run in Philadelphia.
McDonnell, a Moorestown native and Cherry Hill resident, finished the 10-mile race in 47:32:32, which was the ninth-fastest time in the world this year for a 10-mile road course and sixth-fastest by an American, according to sjtrackblog.com.
McDonnell is the first American to win the Broad Street Run since Eric Lorenz of Holy Cross High School, Delran. The race included about 40,000 total runners this year.
McDonnell graduated Camden Catholic in 2008 as a Non-Public A state champion in the 3,200 meter run before competing at Saint Joseph’s University. He took part in the Olympic Trials for the marathon in Orlando in February, where he finished in 58th out of nearly 200 runners.
This was just the second time McDonnell competed in the Broad Street Run, finishing 12th two years ago. However, he won the Philly 10K last summer in a time of 30:40.
