Saint Augustine Preparatory School has announced that longtime basketball coach Paul Rodio will retire at the conclusion of the 2026-27 season.
This season will mark Rodio’s 50th as head coach of the Hermits, who won five state titles and 15 South Jersey championships under his guidance. Rodio’s 1,060 victories are the most in South Jersey history and second all-time in the state. His teams have reached the 20-win mark 36 times in 49 years.
“Coach Rodio has been the cornerstone of our basketball program and school community for 50 years,” Mike Rizzo, the school’s athletic director, said in a statement. “His commitment to excellence, his leadership of young men, and the pride he has brought to Saint Augustine Prep is immeasurable. He built the school into what it is today. While we will certainly miss him, we are grateful to have one more season to celebrate his incredible career.”
According to the school, Saint Augustine Prep plans to celebrate Rodio’s career during his final season with unique events and themes, including class reunion games, an assistant coach reunion game, throwback night in Spina Gym, an alumni game and more to be announced at a later date.
Rodio has spoken publicly about ongoing health issues. Currently, he is on the national liver transplant waitlist at the University of Pennsylvania.
