In response to the growing number of Catholic families choosing cremation, the Diocese of Camden, in conjunction with South Jersey Catholic Cemeteries, has announced the addition of a new granite niche wall in the shape of a cross at New Saint Mary Cemetery & Mausoleum in Bellmawr. The new structure offers a reverent and serene resting place for cremated remains, reflecting the Church’s commitment to both tradition and compassion for families’ modern needs.
While traditional burial remains an important part of Catholic practice, cremation has become an increasingly common choice since the Church officially recognized it in 1963 under Vatican II. The Catholic Church teaches that human remains — whether full body or cremated — should always be treated with reverence and kept intact in a sacred space, symbolizing the Christian belief in the Resurrection.
“We at South Jersey Catholic Cemeteries are excited to announce the addition of this beautiful granite niche wall, designed in the shape of a divine cross,” said Paul I. Martin, director of Cemeteries for the Diocese of Camden. “Located just outside our chapel mausoleum, this new structure provides families with a peaceful and sacred place for their loved ones’ cremated remains.”
Standing just under seven feet tall, the new columbarium features eight walls and offers both single and companion niches, accommodating a variety of family needs.
“We prefer to give our families burial options,” Martin explained. “Whether above ground or below, you can be rest assured that the remains are safe on sanctified ground, according to Church doctrine. With our faith-based guidance, families can find the best option for the final disposition of cremated remains.”
The Diocese plans to continue expanding cremation offerings across its diocesan-managed cemeteries under South Jersey Catholic Cemeteries. Burial options vary depending on each cemetery’s available products. In general, families may choose to place cremated remains in a glass- or granite-front niche within a columbarium, a private family niche cabinet, or within existing ground graves and crypts through grave reuse.
