In the spirit of caring for creation, a bench made out of what would have been discarded plastic was donated to Sacred Heart Residence in Cherry Hill. “This bench is an eco-friendly example of what can be done with such materials rather than place them in a landfill,” Father James J. Durkin said in blessing the green bench as Father John C. Killeen sprinkled it with Holy Water. With the help of faithful from the Catholic Community of Christ Our Light in Cherry Hill, Saint Thomas More parishioners collected 1,000 pounds of thin-film plastics (like those on a loaf of bread). The materials were given to the Trex Recycling Program, which created the bench. This was the third bench from Saint Thomas More parishioners and pastor Father Edward Namiotka; one resides at the Cherry Hill parish, the other was given to the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Infant Jesus on Kresson Road. “May this bench be a reminder to each of us that we are stewards of this planet. Each one of us must do our part to preserve it and care for it,” Father Durkin said.
