The National Eucharistic Revival is entering the Year of Parish Revival on June 11, and the parishes of Camden are among those in the Diocese with plans underway.
On this day, the solemnity of Corpus Christi, Sacred Heart Parish, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and Saint Joseph Pro-Cathedral will come together for a Eucharistic procession through the city. The procession will begin at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church (at Broadway and Ferry Avenue) and proceed along Broadway to Camden’s Cathedral. From there, the procession will continue along Federal Street to Saint Joseph Pro-Cathedral, arriving at 3 p.m. for final prayers and benediction. Choirs from all three parishes will join together in honor of the Blessed Sacrament.
Police are expected to escort the procession, which walking, is 3.5 miles. Those who take part, however, are encouraged to drive the route, following behind the handful of priests and faithful who are scheduled to walk. Return transportation from the Pro-Cathedral to Sacred Heart Church will be available.
Father Vincent Guest, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, said that a Eucharistic procession throughout the city has been a dream of his since he became pastor three years ago.
“As the Diocese begins the parish phase of the Eucharistic Revival, this is a perfect time to have a city-wide procession,” he said.
He also reflected on how Pope Francis calls all to go out to the periphery, to the broken and to the lost, to help others encounter the person of Christ.
“Along the procession route, we will pass those suffering from addiction and the homeless,” Father Guest said, explaining that those who walk will be carrying medals, rosaries and parish information. “We welcome all to encounter the love of Christ and the beauty of our Catholic faith.”
