
Father John J. Tumosa, 82, a retired pastor of the Diocese of Camden, died March 3.
He had been retired since 2011, after serving as pastor of Saint Rose of Lima Parish, Newfield (now part of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish) since 1994.
Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from Immaculate Conception Seminary in Missouri, and Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, before being ordained to the priesthood in Camden on May 31, 1969.
He was parochial vicar at Saint Rose of Lima, 1969-72; Saint Lawrence, Lindenwold, 1972-77; Saint Augustine, Ocean City, 1977-81; Saint Jude, Blackwood, 1981-85; Queen of Heaven, Cherry Hill, 1985-89; and Saint John Vianney, Deptford, 1989-94.
Father Tumosa also served as a Pre-Cana team moderator; spiritual moderator for separated and divorced Catholics; moderator for New Beginnings of Gloucester County, and chaplain to the Newfield Fire Department and the Philadelphia Mummers.
Calling Father Tumosa a kind and generous priest, Father Kenneth Hallahan, a retired priest of the Diocese, said his friend recognized his role in bringing “God’s love and concern” to all people, regardless of whether they knew the faith.
There will be a viewing from 4-7 p.m. on March 10 at Saint Gabriel Parish, 2917 Dickinson St., Philadelphia. Bishop Dennis Sullivan will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial immediately following the viewing, at 7 p.m. Father Hallahan, who knew Father Tumosa for 50 years, will be the homilist.
Burial will take place March 11 at Holy Cross Cemetery, 626 Bailey Road, Yeadon, Pa.
