The Gloucester Catholic High School girls basketball team won its first sectional championship in 42 years as the Rams defeated Rutgers Prep, 46-33, in the South Jersey Non-Public B championship on March 10 at Jackson Liberty High School.

Led by a 21-point effort from junior Jahzara Green, Gloucester Catholic led by five points after three quarters and won the final stanza by a 16-8 margin.

It was the 10th sectional championship in the program’s long history, but the first as coach for Lisa Gedaka, who has been at the helm for 36 years and has compiled the most career wins in South Jersey girls basketball history.

Gloucester Catholic (26-4 record) will face Immaculate Conception High School, Montclair, (20-9) in the Non-Public B state championship at 1 p.m. on March 14 at Rutgers University.

Junior Jahzara Green goes up for a shot against Rutgers Prep during the game.

The Rams are 9-0 in state championship games, with their last title coming in 1983 when Gedaka (then Lisa Angelotti) was a junior on the team.

It will be Montclair Immaculate’s fifth and final appearance in a state championship game, as the school is reportedly set to close at the end of the school year after 100 years. The Lions’ last appearance in the state championship was in 1991; they have never won a state championship.
