WOODBURY HEIGHTS – Bishop Dennis Sullivan celebrated Thanksgiving Day Mass with the parish community at Infant Jesus Parish on Nov. 28.
In his homily, Bishop Sullivan reflected on the spirit of gratitude inspired by the first Thanksgiving – a shared meal between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people. He highlighted the deep faith of the Pilgrims, who undoubtedly gave thanks to God for their safe journey to North America and extended a welcoming hand to those who helped them survive, despite differences in language and culture.

Drawing a connection to one’s own life, Bishop Sullivan reminded the faithful, “To thank God is to recognize that God is the Source. … Before you gather around your family tables, we gather here around this table – the altar – with our parish family to give thanks to God.”
He also shared the wisdom of German theologian Meister Eckhart: “If the only prayer you ever say is ‘Thank You,’ that will be enough.”
At the conclusion of Mass, Bishop Sullivan blessed the generous donations of food and money, which will support the local Saint Vincent de Paul Society conference in their outreach to those in need. He also blessed bread and wine for parishioners to bring home, weaving the spirit of the Eucharist into their Thanksgiving meals.
