As I read Father Robert Gregorio’s piece “In defense of liberalism, rightly understood, again” ((Dec. 10) what struck me most were the facts that Father left out. The focus of his piece was on abortion and euthanasia, which father clearly explained that he is against. Point taken. However, the larger argument is what liberalism, as it is understood today (not necessarily in the dictionary) is all about. After all, the left is famous for creating euphemisms, redefining and using semantics to put a happy face on evil/immorality as it has been understood by the church for 2,000 years: Pro-choice (pro-killing), Gay (active homosexual), end of life care (euthanasia), tolerance (of evil or immorality), equal rights (based on a created class or sexual orientation) — the list goes on. Truth is, liberalism today is an ideology which embraces moral relativism and Marxist tenets. It is not the liberalism of our forefathers, or even of JFK, who by-the-way was patriotic/God fearing, and I would venture to guess would be shocked at the state of debasement of the culture that has been advanced by leftists.
Liberals are fond of platitudes and offering other peoples money (tax dollars) for all sorts of give-aways. Even if it means the country goes broke. This is not to say that there is not a sizable portion of greedy, selfish conservatives. Of course there are. That, however, is the quintessential moral issue of fallen man rather than an indictment on conservatism which holds to established truths that have roots in Judeo-Christianity. Question: Would you credit conservatism or liberalism with the current state of the culture and church?
