Bishop Joseph A. Galante has announced that seven sites in the Diocese of Camden have been designated churches for pilgrimages during the 2012-13 Year of Faith.
Taking place from Oct. 11, 2012- Nov. 24, 2013, the Year of Faith is, as Pope Benedict XVI said, “dedicated to the profession of the true faith.” During a Holy Year, one of the church’s commemorations throughout history has been the pilgrimage.
Pope Benedict XVI has allowed for the granting of a plenary, or full, indulgence, which is a remission of the temporal punishment a person is due for sins that have been forgiven, to anyone who visits sacred shrines, to Catholics who participate in local events connected to the Year of Faith, to those who may be too ill or otherwise prevented from physical participation, and those who visit the pilgrim churches in the Diocese of Camden.
The indulgence can be granted on behalf of the individual petitioner, or on behalf of departed souls.
The sites designated as pilgrimage sites for the Year of Faith in the Diocese of Camden, are:
— Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Camden
— Our Lady Star of the Sea, Cape May
— Our Lady Star of the Sea, Atlantic City
— Corpus Christi Church, St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish, Carneys Point
— Sts. Peter and Paul, Turnersville
— Our Lady of Guadalupe, Lindenwold
— Immaculate Conception Church, Holy Cross Parish, Bridgeton.
Conditions for the Year of Faith indulgence, include the usual requirements for a plenary church indulgence: that the person go to confession, receive the sacrament of the Eucharist, and pray for the intentions of the pope.
