For centuries, pilgrims have traveled along the Camino de Santiago de Compostela to venerate the remains of Saint James.
Now, a new film highlighting pilgrims around the world traveling the Camino is available for rent.
Produced by the Catholic production company Ahava Productions, “Santiago: The Camino Within” features faithful of all languages and backgrounds making the 500-mile trek through France and Spain. They are led by Bishop Donald Joseph Hying of the Diocese of Madison, Wis.
“It’s one of the few places that we can actually truly immerse ourselves in history,” one pilgrim reflects during the film.
Those who walk the Camino are following in the footsteps of Saint James, ending at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, which contains the apostle’s tomb.
This year is a Holy Year in Compostela, meaning the apostle’s feast day, July 25, falls on a Sunday. As such, the Holy Door was opened the evening of Dec. 31, 2020, the eve of the Holy Year. It will close Dec. 31.
“It is the voice of the Lord who calls us and, as pilgrims, we welcome him with an attitude of listening and searching, taking this journey toward the encounter with God, with the other and with ourselves,” the Pope said in recognition of the celebration.
