Retired Auxiliary Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton of Detroit speaks at Sacred Heart Church, Camden, Feb. 13 at a program entitled “Peace and Planet: Imperatives for the 21st Century.” Bishop Gumbleton was founding president of Pax Christi USA, the U.S. branch of the international Catholic peace movement. He is also a former president of Bread for the World, an interfaith organization that fights world hunger through research, education and advocacy. An early advocate of nuclear disarmament, Bishop Gumbleton was a member of the committee that drafted the U.S. bishops’ landmark 1983 pastoral letter, “The Challenge of Peace: God’s Promise and Our Response.” He is a regular contributor to National Catholic Reporter.
