Father Thomas Newton, pastor of Saint Damien Parish, recently presented on “The Eucharist: A Meal We Share” at the parish’s Saint Augustine Church, Ocean City.
The presentations, being offered by the Diocese to help the faithful discern the Eucharist, are part of the three-year National Eucharistic Revival. These learning opportunities are being offered in English, Spanish and Vietnamese and are taking place at churches across the Diocese through Spring 2023.

“At the Eucharist, we gather, we share our story, we are fed and then we go,” he said during the Sept. 21 talk. “I know there are many aspects to Eucharistic theology … but I would like to focus on the beginning. What did Jesus intend the Eucharist to be? At its core, the Eucharist is a meal. Jesus gathered with his friends, with his disciples.”
He continued, “Think about the family meal at Thanksgiving or Christmas. What happens? We gather, we share our stories, we eat and then we go. … Hopefully, when we gather with our families, we gather joyfully. We greet one another. We hug one another. We are happy to see one another. Then we partake of delicious food.
“Because a member of our family may be struggling … may be an addict … may be a sinner … do we ever really say to those people, ‘Don’t come home?’ I don’t think so.”
