Bishop Dennis Sullivan has appointed Mr. Rory J. Sweeney as the next president of Camden Catholic High School, effective July 1, 2023.
“I am grateful to Mr. Sweeney for answering the call to leadership at Camden Catholic High School, and to the Camden Catholic Board of Trustees and the President Search Committee for their discernment in identifying him,” said Dr. Bill Watson, Superintendent of Catholic Schools.
“I am excited to work with him to sustain and build on Camden Catholic’s well-deserved reputation for its strong Catholic identity and community, and excellence in academics, the arts, athletics, and service.”
In November, Mary Whipkey announced that she would be stepping down as President of Camden Catholic at the end of the school year after her 10-year tenure. A President Search Committee was formed soon after.
“After an extensive search conducted by the Search Committee, we are thrilled to announce that Rory will join the school at such an important time in Camden Catholic’s storied history,” noted Jack Wixted, Board Chair of Camden Catholic High School.
“Mr. Sweeney brings strong leadership qualities and a reputation as a distinguished Catholic educator and administrator as the new President of Camden Catholic. He is a man of deep faith who will serve as an excellent role model for the Camden Catholic traditions of Honor, Faith, and Loyalty,” Wixted continued, adding that the school community “will be well served by Mr. Sweeney’s experience across many Catholic School settings.”
“I know he will acclimate to and elevate the presence of the strong Catholic culture and traditions of the school in the broader community.”
Mr. Sweeney has held various positions of increasing responsibility with Saints John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School in Philadelphia, most recently as interim President. In addition, he has prior teaching experience and administrative responsibilities at Monsignor Bonner and Archbishop Prendergast Catholic High School in Philadelphia. A graduate of Saint Joseph’s University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and International Relations, Mr. Sweeney also earned a Master of Science degree in Church Management from Villanova University and a Master of Science in Education with Certification in Secondary Citizenship from Saint Joseph’s University.
