The celebration of the Easter Vigil in Mays Landing

With the Mays Landing faithful, Bishop Dennis Sullivan celebrated the Easter Vigil at Saint Vincent de Paul Parish, bringing the community out of the darkness of Jesus’ death and into the light of His resurrection. Above, Bishop Sullivan and the congregation begin the liturgy outside the church at dusk, with prayers in front of the Easter fire before, bottom left, he, Father Edward Heintzelman, pastor, and seminarian James Sprenger lead a candlelight procession into the pews.

At the Easter Vigil, adult catechumens (those preparing for baptism) received the sacraments of Christian Initiation (baptism, confirmation and holy Eucharist) during the liturgy. The Easter Vigil liturgy includes the blessing of the new fire, the procession with the Easter Candle, the proclamation of Old and New Testament readings (commemorating the whole of the history of salvation), the Litany of Saints, blessing of water, the renewal of baptismal promises and the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
