Editor,
I have seen numerous articles in your newspaper in regards to illegal (as your newspaper refers to them “undocumented”) immigrants expressing sympathy for separated families, etc. These people break the law and are criminals. They are eligible for free health care, and housing and food stamps as well as in state tuition in New Jersey. Yet they still demand more and to be treated the same as citizens. All of these which are paid for by U.S. citizens who are in this country legally. Thanks to President Obama, veterans and retired military members (those who have served 20-plus years) have had their benefits cut in order to provide more benefits to illegal immigrants. An illegal immigrant can cross the border and have a child and be eligible for benefits immediately whereas disabled combat veterans must wait a year. I myself am a veteran of the U.S. Air Force; however, because I was discharged two weeks before the two year mark, I am unable to receive free health care through the Veterans Administration. As Catholics we are taught to follow the Ten Commandments, one of which is “Thou shall not steal.” Breaking the law by crossing the border and receiving benefits is stealing, especially when we have needy families who are citizens who have difficulty getting benefits. How can your newspaper support illegal immigrants while our veterans are being ignored?
