Editor:
What a wonderfully humane column Bishop Galante wrote about our obligations as Christians to support reform of our immigration laws (Catholic Star Herald, Feb. 18). The immigration issue in our country has profound moral dimensions especially for all who believe in the call of the Gospel to “Welcome the stranger.” It is refreshing to see from our bishop the same fervor for the dignity of life after birth as has been expressed for life before birth.
Immigrants, no matter what their legal status, enrich our culture, our economy and our church. Many of them work at jobs that are invisible to us but are essential to our economy and our well-being. Calling undocumented workers illegals makes it easier to demonize them. As a friend of ours once said, “No human being is illegal.” As children of God they deserve our support to finding a better legal avenue to coming here and a path toward citizenship.
